Message From Your President

IT’S OUR CONTRACT,
WE’LL FIGHT FOR IT!

IB ImageUpcoming contract negotiations with UPS will be a fight for our future—and a break with the past.

Our contract with UPS doesn’t expire until August of next year. But the International Union is considering starting contract negotiations early, possibly as soon as this Fall.

Whenever bargaining starts with UPS, Local 804 will be ready.

Members Speak Out on the Contract

The UPS contract expires in 2013.

We asked members what improvements they’d like to see in the next contract.

Here’s what they had to say.

IB Image"We need to win higher contributions from UPS to protect our benefits and improve our pensions. No more split wage increases."

Raul Modesto, Mt. Vernon

IB Image"Management has forgotten what a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay means. We need stronger contract language to protect us from harassment. I trust this Board to fight for me, but they need contract language with teeth, not loopholes."

Dorothy Hanlon, Melville

IB Image"Part-timers want to move up and become full-time.

"We need to make the company create more full-time jobs."

Ray Hebert, Foster Ave.

IB Image"Part-timers give an honest day’s work, but don’t get an honest day’s pay.

"The starting salary’s been stuck at $8.50 for fifteen years. Let’s raise the bar for part-timers in the next contract."

Dave Loobie, Foster Ave.

IB Image"We need to make UPS respect the contract and restore some common sense to discipline. Everything is dishonesty with management these days. We need to make the company honor Article 7. Human error is not dishonesty."

Mike Costanza, Nassau

IB Image"No information Brownout like last time. Informing members and getting us involved will help us win a better contract. Keeping us in the dark only got us concessions."

Eddie Oguchi, Maspeth

IB Image"Pension and healthcare are number one for me.

"We’ve got good benefits and we have to protect them."

Dale Williams, 43rd Street

A Better Contract for All Teamsters

IB ImagePart-timers and other inside employees are organizing meetings at Local 804 to talk about what can be done to win better pay and stronger contract rights for inside employees in the next contract.

Teamsters from Foster Avenue and Maspeth have held contract meetings so far.

It's your contract and your future. Talk to your steward or business agent about holding a contract meeting for Teamsters at your building.

Chris Williamson Comes Off the Job To Help Inside Workers

IB ImageShop Steward Chris Williamson helped coordinate the Supervisors Working campaign that’s paying off in Maspeth.

Now Local 804 is putting Chris to work beefing up contract enforcement across our local.

Williamson is coming off the job to work on a special assignment, training part-timers and inside workers how to enforce their contract rights—from supervisors working grievances to harassment and other contract issues.

"My job is to show other members how to stand together and stand up for themselves," Williamson said.

Chris will also help coordinate outreach to part-timers and inside workers as part of the the Local 804 campaign for a good contract.

"UPS has part-time workers, but there’s no such thing as a part-time Teamster," Williamson said. "Working together, part-timers and other inside employees can enforce our rights and win the pay and the contract that we deserve."

Standing Up for Part-Timers

Local 804 is taking grievance action to win full-time 22.3 jobs.

IB ImageUPS is creating new 22.3 positions in Nassau, Maspeth and 43rd Street.

UPS has filled 14 full-time 22.3 jobs this year. We’re making progress on the 22.3 issue, but it’s not nearly enough.

The previous Local 804 administration allowed management to eliminate 22.3 jobs when they went vacant. We are working to get these jobs filled and put part-timers to work in full-time jobs.

We are sad to announce the passing of Brother Mike Rogalle. A 39-year member of Local 804, Mike was struck by an SUV while doing his route in Lower Manhattan.

Mike was a good friend and a good Teamster and he will be missed by the members in the Manhattan South building and across our local.

Local 804 is raising funds to help provide for Mike’s family, including his three children. A raffle will be held at the General Membership Meeting.

To help with other fundraising for the Rogalle family, contact union representative Anthony Cerulli who is coordinating Local 804’s fundraising efforts.

Don't Fall for the Technology Trap

IB ImageUPS is disciplining and even terminating drivers for “dishonesty” and “falsification of records” for flagging packages and entering the wrong information into the DIAD.

This is happening across the country and arbitrators are ruling for the company.

Following UPS’s methods is the best way to protect yourself.

Health Fund: Back from the Brink

IB ImageWhen we took office two years ago, we inherited a Health Fund on the brink.

Our Health Fund was projected to be $13 million in the red by this year—out of money and unable to pay the bills.

Today, we’re proud to report that your Local 804 Health Fund has nearly $18 million.

After years of mismanagement, your Local 804 Health Fund is back on track. This financial turnaround will protect members from additional benefit cuts for the life of the contract.

As we head to the bargaining table for a new contract, we’ll be fighting for increased contributions to protect and improve your health benefits.

25 & Out: Pension and Retiree Healthcare

Strong pensions with 25 & Out benefits and retiree healthcare at 25 & Out are a bedrock of Local 804. And we have fought to defend that bedrock.

In 2007, UPS and the former Executive Board negotiated a contract that would eliminate 25 & Out pensions for every new Teamster. Members voted that contract down and saved 25 & Out.

Two years later, the former Executive Board cut another deal—this time with the company trustees on the Health Fund to end 25 & Out retiree healthcare at any age.

We discovered that secret deal when we came into office—and we put an end to it.

The company trustees demanded that retiree healthcare be hiked to $1,100 for family coverage. We said no and defeated this giveback.

Contract negotiations will be the next battle line in the fight to protect retire healthcare. Local 804 members will be ready

9.5 Campaign Delivers

IB ImageLocal 804 has launched a campaign to spread the word about drivers’ 9.5 rights and help members protect themselves from being over-dispatched.

Union action is paying off. Drivers are getting on the list and their loads are being adjusted.

Getting On the 9.5 list is Easy. After you work more than 9.5 hours three times in a week, go with your steward to put your name on the 9.5 list.

Enforcement Pays Off. Once you’re on the 9.5 list, if management violates 9.5 just file a grievance. Members have won thousands of dollars in penalty pay and gotten their loads adjusted.

Get the Overtime You Want. Getting on the 9.5 list doesn’t mean you’re going to lose your overtime. Be clear with your steward and management about how much overtime you want and get your load adjusted so it’s reasonable.

For more information talk to your shop steward or Business Agent. Click here to download the 9.5 Rights Enforcement Packet.
